On Friday, 6th December, the Wildings and us left for one of Africa’s largest game reserve, Kruger National Park in South Africa. I can’t express to you the excitement I felt in just the anticipation of going to Kroger. We had spent two years hearing about it before we left on mission and then from all the other senior couples. It being such a prominent attraction in Africa, made it a “must” see while in Africa….and we were so close for these two years. We were over the Swazi border and at the Kruger gate just 2 1/2 hours after we left our front door. Two and half hours and we were amongst the most fascinating animals in the beauty of the African landscape.
Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and one of the world’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. It is approximately the same size as Israel. Kruger is the ultimate place to experience wild Africa and search out the Big 5. The term “Big 5” refers to five of Africa’s greatest wild animals – lion, leopard, elephant, cape buffalo and rhino and we were lucky to see all five and many other amazing animals. Along with that, we saw some incredible landscapes, sunrises and sunsets, and brilliant skies.
Even before we made it to our camp at Skukuza, we saw numerous elephants, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, warthogs, cape buffalo, monkeys, baboons, colorful birds and impalas. It was magnificent! So I am going to share the next 5 days with you in pictures. Enjoy!
All this before we made it to our camp
The only times we say leopards were at night – so this is the best we could do with our camera---shame
I was thrilled to see a baobab tree
This was the cape buffalo right after her mud bath
These hyenas were very close
Wild dogs – aren’t they beautiful
The lionesses enjoying their kill – a wildebeest
I miss these magnificent animals. After seeing them in the wild, on their turf, my heart breaks to see them in the zoo!
