WHAT ARE THEY THINKING??? 8 June 2016

There is one thing in Johannesburg that I will never understand  -  WHAT ARE THEY THINKING when they stand in the middle of a busy street begging for money.  Seriously, every intersection during peak traffic hours have someone standing in the middle of the street selling wares, washing your windshield while the robot is red or just begging for money.  Even when it is dark, they are standing in the street!  I cannot begin to tell you how many times we have just barely missed someone because we could not see them until we were right there.  WHAT ARE THEY THINKING? They are asking for an early passage to heaven.  But the worst is, when you see women on the street with tiny children.  WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?  What if a car happen to get out of control, or the child momentarily leaves the curb?
 WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?
Read his sign - this is what we see almost every intersection

 This is outrageous
Every evening when we leave the area office, this lady sits on the curb with a small child asking for money.  This is not the curb by the sidewalk - it is the median between the two lanes.  Shame on this woman.  Today we saw two women with two small babies in this exact spot!
The picture is blurry but I wanted you to see how close the cars come to them.  The car you can see is turning onto the lane behind her.  Some people say that the children may not even be theirs.  They just get a child for more sympathy.
This intersection is right off the freeway turning onto Oxford - the street that leads to our home.

This man greets us every morning and afternoon with his bag.  We took this picture and then gave him some money.  Shame on us!!!

At least some try and do a service.  When the robot turns red, they rush to the cars and start cleaning the windshield for a price....even when you shake your head NO.  At times we have had to turn on our windshield wipers so they cant get to the windshield.  This might sound cruel, but when you experience it at every robot, you get tired of it and run out of coins to pay them.

There are a lot that sell items as the cars are stopped.  We have never bought, so I have no idea how you can find out the price, get your money out to pay and receive your items before the light changes. But look at all the cars that are surround those young men. (Dennis looks like he is driving with his eyes closed - what is HE thinking?)

If you look closely, in the middle of the picture you can see a man in a wheelchair.  Look at all the cars surrounding him.
Another man in a wheelchair.  Look how close he is to our car!

 She is pregnant!.

  1. That sounds like a pretty rough drive through the city every day. I love the men washing your windshield without having permission.
